Field advantage

An enviable position

We sit in a position our ancestors never held. Fights from every continent reach us without our having to stand inside them — without the risk of being physically present in the encounter.

That is an advantage they never had: the chance to collect data and observations about combat at a distance, to compare patterns across places and moments, and to judge fighting itself by evidence rather than rumour or tradition alone.

…modern observations deprive all former writers of any authority, since if they had seen what we see, they would have judged as we judge.
Galileo Galilei, letter to Johannes Kepler, 1610

Encounters is that work begun: a living catalogue of classified combat footage, kept so the study of fighting can proceed from what can be seen.
